WANDSWORTH UNIONS LAUNCH CAMPAIGN FOR CLEAN AIR IN TOOTING MARKETS WITH PHOTOCALL ON 14th FEBRUARY AS PART OF TUC HEARTS UNION WEEK.

We want to work together with the market owners, stallholders, and the Council to improve the air quality in the markets says Battersea and Wandsworth Trades Union Council.

BWTUC, and the Trade Union Clean Air Network, launched a campaign for clean air in Tooting Markets with a photocall outside the market at 11am on Wednesday, 14th February as part of the TUC Hearts Union week.

Internal pollution levels from cooking in the market are very high, exceeding those on the main road. Wandsworth Council are the enforcement authority for public health and safety in the markets. They have been in contact with the owners of the markets to secure improvements in the air quality.

The photo-call held on February 14 outside the markets consisted of union members holding a banner with the words:

'Trade Unions for Clean Air' with the logos of BWTUC and TUCAN. Photos are available on request. See below.

The TUC HeartUnions week runs from 12-18 February 2024. A chance to tell the story about why unions are vital for everyone at work and encourage them to join a union.

Graham Petersen from BWTUC said.

"It is vital that we work with all interested parties to understand and tackle the problem. Battersea and Wandsworth Trade Union Council has been monitoring pollution levels and reviewing solutions. Measures need to be put in place to reduce the risk to workers and the public.”

Councillor Jamie Colclough, LB Wandsworth Clean Air Champion

“The markets in Tooting are a great retail and entertainment space. They provide jobs, opportunities for small independent businesses and have helped to put Tooting on the map as an important night-time attraction in South London. A good night out should also be a healthy night out, so Wandsworth Council has offered to work with the markets, looking to access grant money, to raise clean air standards, making this an even better place to work and play.”
