Achievements and Campaigns

Trade unions are permanent and ongoing campaign organisations for economic and social justice.

The aims of this campaign have remained consistent over the past two centuries since trade unions have been legal in the United Kingdom. These aims are:

Democracy in securing the right to vote for elected representatives
The rule of law
Economic Justice
Social Justice

The lifestyle and living standards we enjoy today have been achieved over the past two centuries by trade union members who persistently advocated for and secured a fair share of the nation's wealth.

Over the years, Parliament has enacted numerous employment laws granting workers rights. Trade unions are the primary enforcers of these rights in the workplace.

Consequently, trades union members are paid nearly £1 per hour more than those who do not belong as well as enjoying better packages including pensions and other benefits according to official government trades union statistics 2024.

Generations of trade union members campaigned for and successfully achieved the following:

  • The right of all adults to elect those who govern national and local government
  • The abolition of tyranny and its replacement with the rule of law established by democratically elected representatives

Some of the most significant achievements of trade unions in terms of economic and social justice include:

  • The eight-hour workday
  • The weekend
  • Decent pay standards
  • Occupational pension schemes
  • Holidays
  • Equal pay
  • Sick pay
  • Maternity leave and pay
  • Protective clothing
  • Healthy and safe workplaces and practices
  • Compensation for death and injury at work
  • Bonuses
  • Overtime pay
  • Shift pay
  • Bereavement leave
  • Paternity leave and pay
  • Time off for trade union duties
  • National Health Service (NHS)
  • Welfare state with a safety net for individuals experiencing illness, disability, unemployment, or retirement
  • Universal free education for primary and secondary school students

BWTUC Recent Achievements

01

Alton Estate, Roehampton

Recently, the BWTUC provided support to approximately 300 residents of the Alton Estate in Roehampton who were threatened with eviction as their homes were demolished to make way for a development intended to generate revenue for property developers.

The unions did not let them down and assisted them to get the plan scrapped and secure a new acceptable major development plan for the estate. We commend their unwavering determination to advocate for a plan that enjoys the support of the residents on the estate.

02

Outsourced workers pay parity campaign

The previous Conservative administration in Wandsworth outsourced 1,100 workers in street cleaning, parks, estate maintenance, and other services to private contractors. These workers were primarily paid the national minimum wage and received £100 per week less than the Council’s direct employees. The BWTUC campaigned tirelessly over years for pay parity.

03

2022 change, staged parity delivered

Over the years, BWTUC has supported the election of Labour Party MPs and councillors. In 2022, a Labour Council was elected, and pay parity was achieved in stages. This resulted in over £100 per worker per week pay rises for all 1,100 outsourced workers of the Wandsworth Council.

04

Ark Bolingbroke Academy catchment expanded

BWTUC and GMB Union successfully expanded the Ark Bolingbroke Academy catchment area to include the Falconbrook primary school on the Winstanley estate. This expansion provided children from all backgrounds in Battersea with equal opportunities.

05

Crane collapse justice and safer law

When Michael Alexa, a 23-year-old Unite member, and Johnathon Cloke, a 37-year-old member of the public, were tragically killed when a crane collapsed on September 26, 2006, BWTUC and Unite Union fought tirelessly for justice and compensation for their families. They ultimately achieved a new law to prevent future crane disasters.

06

Safer London buses campaign

BWTUC are part of a campaign to prevent busses in London, which are run by outsourced transport companies, injuring and killing other road users in collisions which are partly due to busses speeding to meet punctuality targets. This is an ongoing campaign. See link to the campaign.
